Looking backward, inward

She is so sweet and quiet
that people often wonder
What’s she doing with him?
because they don’t see
the spark of amusement in her eye
when he says something outrageous.

In fact
she’s the perfect foil for him–
Batman to his Joker.
He needs her for contrast
because without her he is nothing.

But it’s more than that. She gives him:
warmth
hope
joy
laughter
help
assurance
comfort
protection
kisses
advice
criticism
love.

In return, she gets:
frustration
vexation
consternation
obfuscation
aggravation
exasperation
with a little flirtation
not enough appreciation
but on good days, hopefully,
exhilaration.

A third of their lives
together
bickering and
joking and
not speaking and
sharing long conversations and
living
making a go of it
despite everything
because of everything
learning from everything.
He’s grateful for everything
(even if he’d never say it in public
seeing as he has this reputation
to maintain and everything.)

[Thanks, Kristy. I love you!]
