The Joys of Fatherhood

A toddler jumps up to hug you and
in the process stomps on your testicles
intense pain mixed with surprised joy
the child grins, unaware
throws his arms around your neck
grinds his heel on the gonads
you try to shift position
save yourself
it gets worse
but he smiles and says I love you
with only vowels
his face is so damned earnest
devoid of an adult’s self-awareness
the world flashes perfection
for a brilliant moment
then he’s gone, back to his trains
your trampled genitals scream but you
smile
