Should’ve known better

He felt fine until the safety bar lowered
trapping him against the orange plastic bench
less a precaution than a threat.

When the boat began to rock
first forward than back
his stomach sloshed lemonade and pizza.

After one full pendulum
he closed his eyes in hopes that
removing visual stimuli would calm his guts.

As the ship reached its pinnacle
and he sat facing the sky at a 90° angle
his body lost the battle with nausea.

Vomit shot upward a foot or so before
gravity halted its advance and
it seemed to hang frozen in midair.

The boat fell before the spray did
dousing a family of four in acidic chunks
raising their screams to a higher pitch.

When the ride came to a complete stop
and the safety bar raised
he sprinted through the exit gate.
