On Parenting a Child of 7 (Day 16, 2016)

Day 16 of National Poetry Writing Month.

On Parenting a Child of 7

I wish we had
plumbing so outdated
that flushing the toilet
right now
would make my daughter’s
shower run cold
because I have had enough of
her sass
and I would enjoy
hearing the wail
of her discomfort
rise like steam
from the frosted-glass cubicle
as she hurried to
slam the faucet off
her black hair half suds
and her white teeth clamped together
as I scampered out
of the bathroom
snickering
only to sneak back in
and do it again
as soon as she resumed her washing.
